“I Just Want Something Cool For My Desk.”
“Why toys?” That’s usually the first question when we tell people about our new endeavor. Some may be surprised to know that Caiphus spent almost 20 years as an artist in the video game industry, working in many areas of development from concept art, world building, to voice acting and characters. Yet, if you ask him, “Why he wants to start an art toy and apparel studio?”, his answer is always the same: I just want something cool for my desk.
If you’re ever lucky enough to take a tour of a video game or any creative company, pay attention to the desks. You can find out all you need to know about the person who occupies that seat without even meeting them. Try it.
Caiphus recalls:
“Man, I worked with plenty of people and almost everyone had some sort of mini toy collection at their desk. I would zip around on my little scooter to visit coworkers and I would always be amazed at how well their toys matched their personalities. I worked with a guy named Will ( big shout out to my boy Ill Wurth) that always had the newest pieces. I’m talking the large scale exclusive Ashley Wood joints and some other really neat collectibles. I would go by his cube just to check out his new editions. Then afterwards, I would zoom back to my desk and it always felt a bit anti climatic. Don’t get me wrong. I had some sick pieces too. Classics! But they didn’t really reflect who I was. I guess I suffered from Toy Envy. Hahaha!
So once 3D printing rolled around, I was like: That’s it, I gonna make something that reflects me.
It was an ambitious under taking. We used Z-Brush daily at work, so I was already accustomed to the software that most of the toy industry uses but I had no clue about the manufacturing. Luckily for me, there were many 3rd party services that did the heavy lifting for you. So I made a boombox sculpt and sent it away to get printed. A week later it came back and had a tiny 3” radio in my hand! That was it, I was hooked. Then I sculpted a 12” Radio Raheem to go along with it! After that I realized that one person could pretty much do the full line of production by themselves. The seed was planted.”
Here at Short Drop, we hope that seed will bear fruit as we begin the exciting journey from hobbyists to entrepreneurs. The art toy industry is constantly growing and reaching new audiences everyday. We plan on creating designs that will inspire new collectors in expressing their identities through vinyl and resin. Short Drop is confident that our work will exemplify authenticity, high quality and truly be well received. Not to mention helping to decorate eclectic desks all around the globe.
Wish us luck and stay tuned!
